Halloween #2

Discovered that not all Oklahomans refer to sweatpants as "hot pants"...it's just Zach. Grocery-shopped with Cassie at the co-op, where we found a strand of little UAE flags to brighten up our wall, as well as some UAE camel birthday hats which we will definitely be returning for. I'm amazed by how many fruits, vegetables, and spices I don't recognize in this part of the world. I can't wait until our ovens are installed so I can start exploring! So far, all we have are vent hoods above the counter tops where the stoves should be...it's like they're mocking us. Apparently, there were supposed to be kitchen appliances which were installed, but then some miscommunication occurred and they were taken out, and now they are scheduled to be reinstalled anytime between now and...January. Good job, Sama Tower. Until then, we're getting creative with our microwaves...but definitely not with rice cookers or hot plates because that would be in violation of our residence contracts.

Kayaked in the mangrove swamps just outside the city. It was really relaxing and surreal to see crabs and fox dens just inches away from me and the skyline in the distance. We kayaked up a newly dug channel which destroyed a lot of the red fox habitat and heard a little about the effects pollution from construction sites is having on the mangroves. They're really essential to controlling the salinity of the water in this part of the world, so hopefully the ambitious city planners of Abu Dhabi will take this into account!

Had professor's children trick-or-treat to our room while I attempted to form an opinion about Wallace v. Jaffree for Government and Religion. I'm sure the profs were amused and slightly alarmed by our fascination with children. College is great, but glimpses into normal family life are sadly lacking. Got "headless" with some of my fellow creative writers and submitted that Supreme Court opinion at exactly midnight. I'm amused at my own audacity...I disagreed with Justice Sandra Day O'Conner.
